Many sea anglers have a problem using these hooks because they require no hook set. If you do try to set the hook, it will generally come out of the mouth of the fish. These hooks are designed to move to the corner of the fish's mouth and set themselves as the fish swims away from you. Anglers feel a bite and simply begin reeling, slowly at first, then faster as the hook gets set.

LIVE BAIT
These hooks generally have a shorter shank than other hooks. Whether that is to allow the live bait to swim more freely or to be less apparent to the fish is debatable. My vote is to allow the bait to swim more freely. These hooks come in regular and circle designs. Regular live bait hooks will be swallowed and result in gut hooks most of the time. Circle live bait hooks provide a greater chance for a good release.

BAITHOLDER
Baitholder Hooks - These are very widely used by sea anglers. These are good hooks for worm bait they have a ringed eye and have 2 slices or barbs in the shank to assist with holding the bait up the shank of the hook.

KAHLE

Hook Choice!

First, use common sense. As simple as that may sound, I can't tell you the number of times I have seen people make some really bad hook choices. Match the hook size with the fish!
Second, use some trial and error and learn from your mistakes. No one became a good fisherman overnight. All of us had to learn either from someone else or by trial and error.
Thirdly, get a good brand of hook, such as Sakuma or Mustad. Try to avoid cheap hooks for the reason that they are just not up for the job, you don't want to let that fish of a life time get away because of a crap hook bend out on you! If you are going to spend any money on Terminal tackle you hooks should be the number one first choice.

My personal favourites are Sakuma Singers and Mustad Worm hooks for flatfish and Mustad Aberdeen and Ultra Point Bass Hooks for Bottom Fishing for Huss off the rocks where a stronger hook is needed but a larger gape for bigger baits is required.

Finally, to all of you who are new to fishing, try taking these examples and build your learning experiences upon them. Trial and error are often the best teachers in any skill.

Effects on child development, brain development, psychopathology, and interpersonal relationships

Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse (broadly termed, child maltreatment) have profound and long-term effects on a child's development. The long-term effects of chronic early maltreatment within a care-giving relationship (also called Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) of a child can be seen in higher rates of psychiatric disorders, increased rates of substance abuse, and a variety of severe relationship difficulties. Child maltreatment is an inter-generational problem. Most frequently the perpetrators of abuse and neglect are profoundly damaged people who have been abused and neglected themselves.

There are clear links between neglect and abuse and later psychological, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal disorders. The basis for this linkage is the impact that abuse and neglect have on brain development. Daniel Siegel, medical director of the Infant and Preschool Service at the University of California, L.A., has found important links between interpersonal experiences and neurobiological development (The Developing Mind: Toward a Neurobiology of Interpersonal Experience. Daniel J. Siegel, Guilford Press, 1999.)

We know that a child uses the parent's state of mind to regulate the child's own mental processes. It is through a sensitive, responsive, and caring relationship with a primary care-giver that a child develops self-regulation abilities, emotional control, behavioral regulation, and such cognitive abilities as cause-effect thinking, among others. The child's developing capacity to regulate emotions and develop a coherent sense of self requires sensitive and responsive parenting. The National Adoption Center found that 52% of adoptable children have attachment disorder symptoms. In another study, by Cicchetti, & Barnett[2], 80% of abused or maltreated infants exhibited attachment disorder symptoms. The best predictor of a child's attachment classification is the state of mind with respect to attachment of the birth mother. A birth mother's attachment classification before the birth of her child can predict with 80% accuracy her child's attachment classification at six years of age. That is a remarkable finding. Finally, recent research by Mary Dozier, Ph.D.[3] found that the attachment classification of a foster mother has a profound effect on the attachment classification of the child. She found that the child's attachment classification becomes similar to that of the foster mother after three months in placement. These findings strongly argue for a non-genetic mechanism for the transmission of attachment patterns across generations.

Children who have been sexually abused are at significant risk of developing anxiety disorders (2.0 times the average), major depressive disorders (3.4 times average), alcohol abuse (2.5 times average), drug abuse (3.8 times average), and antisocial behavior (4.3 times average)[4].

Generally the left hemisphere of the brain is the site of language, motor activity on the right side of the body, and logical thought based on language. The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for motor activity on the left side of the body, context perceptions, face recognition, interpersonal and emotional processing, and holistic perception. The orbito-frontal cortex (the part of the brain directly behind the eyes) is responsible for integrating emotional responses generated in the limbic system with higher cognitive functions, such as planning and language, in the cerebral cortex's prefrontal lobes. The left orbito-frontal cortex is responsible for memory creation while the right orbito-frontal cortex is responsible for memory retrieval. Healthy functioning requires an integrated right and left hemisphere. A substantial number of synaptic connections among brain cells develop during the first year of life into the middle of the second year of life. An integrated brain requires connections between the hemispheres by the corpus callosum. Abused and neglected children have smaller corpus callosum than non-abused children. Abused and neglected children have poorly integrated cerebral hemispheres. This poor integration of hemispheres and underdevelopment of the orbitofrontal cortex is the basis for such symptoms as difficulty regulating emotion, lack of cause-effect thinking, inability to accurately recognize emotions in others, inability of the child to articulate the child's own emotions, an incoherent sense of self and autobiographical history, and a lack of conscience.

The brains of maltreated children are not as well integrated as the brains of non-abused children. This helps explain why maltreated children have significant difficulties with emotional regulation, integrated functioning, and social development. Conscience development and the capacity for empathy are largely functions of the orbito-frontal cortex. When development in this area of the brain is hindered, there are important social and emotional difficulties. It is very interesting that the orbito-frontal cortex is sensitive to face recognition and eye contact. Maltreated children frequently have disorders of attachment because of their birth-parents lack of sensitive responsive interactions with the child.

Early interpersonal experiences have a profound impact on the brain because the brain circuits responsible for social perception are the same as those that integrate such functions as the creation of meaning, the regulation of body states, the regulation of emotion, the organization of memory, and the capacity for interpersonal communication and empathy. Stressful experiences that are overtly traumatizing or chronic cause chronic elevated levels of neuroendocrine hormones. High levels of these hormones can cause permanent damage to the hippocampus, which is critical for memory.[5] Based on this we can assume that psychological trauma can impair a person's ability to create and retain memory and impede trauma resolution.

Abused and neglected children exhibit a variety of behaviors that can lead to any number of diagnoses. However, the effect of early abuse and neglect on the child can be seen in several critical areas of development. These areas include emotional regulation, behavioral regulation, attachment, biology, response flexibility, a coherent integrated sense of self across time, the ability to engage in affect attunement with significant others (empathy and emotional connectedness), self-concept, cognitive abilities and learning, and conscience development.

The effects of early maltreatment on a child's development are profound and long lasting. It is the impact of maltreatment on a child's developing brain that causes effects seen in a wide variety of domains including social, psychological, and cognitive development. The ability to regulate emotions and become emotionally attuned with another depends on early experiences and the development of specific regions of the brain. Early maltreatment causes deficits in the development of these brain regions, primarily the orbito-frontal cortex and corpus callosum, because of the toxic effects of stress hormones on the developing brain.

These findings strongly suggest that effective treatment requires a sensitive affectively attuned relationship. Siegel stated, "As parents reflect with their securely attached children on the mental states that create their shared subjective experience, they are joining with them in an important co-constructive process of understanding how the mind functions. The inherent feature of secure attachment contingent, collaborative communication is also a fundamental component in how interpersonal relationships facilitate internal integration in a child."[6] This has implications for the effective treatment of maltreated children. For example, when in a therapeutic relationship the client is able to reflect upon aspects of traumatic memories and experience the affect associated with those memories without becoming dysregulated, the client develops an expanded capacity to tolerate increasing amounts of affect. The client learns to self-regulate. The attuned resonant relationship between client and therapist enables the client to make sense (a left-hemisphere function) out of memories, autobiographical representations, and affect (right hemisphere functions).

Effective treatments, such as Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, can have important positive effects on later development.

Long Hairstyles for Women Over 40, Good or Bad?
We all love long hair at any age, but once we start getting into our 40's really long hair doesn't look as good on us any longer. This doesn't stand true for everyone but most who are just wearing their long hair in a ponytail really need to start looking into a more attractive hair style that is shorter and just as easy to take care of.

Problems with long hair on women over 40 is:

Long hair tends to drag ones features down and usually has less life and no volume. Yet you see women over 40 with hair that has no life but are afraid to cut it. The longer your hair is the heavier its going to be, which if it's all one length your hair will look flat and life less. Its very unattractive for anyone with hair that is long with no life because it can add to your age not take away from it. Another problem is when you take all that time to style it, the style doesn't last more than an hour without tons of product it in. Again too much product will drag your hair down and make it limp. Just throwing your hair into a ponytail cause you don't want to deal with it, doesn't look well on you either.

A great example of a good hair style for women over 40 would be Meg Ryan's A-line Bob. Her hair is naturally curly but when she wears it natural, it works for a do' for a night on the town or a busy day at the office. Easy to work with, and it you can wear it at any age even grandmothers in the 60's.

Hairstyles that are A-line with layers and shoulder length with shaggy layers are two very workable styles for today's women over 40. Cuts such as Victoria Beckman are great for the younger crowd but are too harsh for those over 40.

One thing you need to take into account is one's shape of one's face. It becomes a huge factor in finding the right style for you. Don't forget that color is also a factor in your hairstyle as well as lifestyle. Gray hair is great but you don't need to have it with so many choice of colors you can get these days. Covering up your gray isn't considered wrong in today world it has become more of a statement you're too hip to be gray. Covering gray isn't like it used to be, it can be done quickly with too much trouble by a good hairstylist. Don't make the mistake that all over one color is best because it can age you worse than just leaving in the gray alone. Look for a hairstylist that can explain better what high lights, and or low lights can do to help open up your face making it look younger.

It's time to start thinking about having bangs, even if they are just wispy ones because bangs take away from your age not add to it. Parting your hair down the middle and just letting it hang there is just too old for you! Start thinking about actresses you see that are over 40 and you will see that they are changing up their hair styles to look younger. Take pictures with you to your next haircut of anyone who you know to be over 40 with a hairstyle you really like. A good hairstylist will let you know if your hair is right for that cut.
Take the time to start thinking about hairstyles you like, but remember you don't need to go super short either. Not everyone can pull off Jamie Lee Curtis latest pixie cut. Hairstyles are highly personal and based on lots of different factors, talking with your hairstylist about how much time you are willing to take in the morning for a new hairstyle. Thermage: the Non Surgical Face Lift
Surgical face lifts used to be the most commonly known procedures for fighting aging. This procedure involves incisions made on the skin near the hairline, and then the facial muscles and skin are tightened before suturing. Anesthesia is needed for this anti aging treatment.

However, with the development of newer anti aging treatments surgical face lifts are now replaced by non surgical face lift procedures such as Thermage, which is non-invasive and totally safe. The use of Thermage as an anti aging skin care treatment has been approved by FDA in 2002. Non surgical face lift takes less time compared to surgery, and because it does not involve scalpels or stitches, no recovery time is required after the treatment. Patients can immediately resume work or other activities after undergoing a Thermage procedure.

What is involved in the Thermage process? First, the skin is cleansed to free it from oils and dirt. Then a special device called a Thermatip, delivers capacitive radiofrequency (CRF) into the deeper layers of the skin, or the dermis. This CRF helps to heat the collagen layers beneath the skin, helping them to become tighter, and thus helping the outermost layer of the skin to smoothen and tighten as well. The Thermatip is passed onto the skin surface, so it cools the skin it touches and heats the layers beneath it. The mild discomfort felt during the Thermage treatment is the alternate heating and cooling in certain areas of the skin.

Thermage process can take less than half an hour to as much as two hours, depending on the amount of skin areas to be treated. The average cost of Thermage is around ,000. Side effects of Thermage are mild blistering, bumps, or redness on the areas treated.

Comparing with micro dermabrasion, results of Thermage can be seen after only one session. Immediately after the procedure, a patient will feel her skin tighter and will achieve a more youthful looking glow. So in the long run, Thermage is relatively cheaper than other non surgical procedures for anti aging.

Treatment process:

Numbing cream is first applied and left on for 20 minutes. This was then wiped off and a cold gel spread liberally over my cheeks down to my neck. Using a handheld device, Dr Loh fired shots section-by-section around my cheeks down to my jaw. He focused on my jaw line and chin to firm those areas and also applied some shots at my temple for my crows feet and to lift my eyes.
Ultheras ultrasound energy felt like an electrical sewing machine stitching my skin from deep within. Some parts, especially around the bony areas like cheekbones and temples, felt more sensitive. To relieve the pain, I gritted my teeth and focused my thoughts on looking five years younger.

Results:

My face felt really tight after the Ulthera treatment and when I tried to smile, my lower face, where Dr Loh focused the ultrasound energy, felt stretched. There was some mild redness which went away in 30 minutes and the tight feeling also wore away soon after.

The pinch test: Before Ulthera, I was able to pinch the soft and loose skin underneath my chin easily. After Ulthera, the skin underneath my chin firmed up and became more difficult to pinch. Goodbye double chin! Will update again in three months when results peak and I look like a 25-year-old (hopefully!).
